OAT Principal contributes to a major campaign about disadvantaged pupils

As part of their ‘Challenge the Impossible’ campaign, Teach First have brought together a collection of case studies from school’s leaders from across the country.

The case studies have a regional context and make clear the patchwork nature of disadvantage in the UK, as well as the difference in character that it has, depending on locality. Each case study in this publication sets out a school leaders approach to tackling a key challenge for their school or academy.

Jane Nolan, Executive Principal of Ormiston South Parade Academy and OAT’s Primaries Development Co-ordinator, has contributed an essay on the challenges around teacher recruitment and retention, particularly in areas of disadvantage. She offers some far-reaching suggestions as to how these issues might be tackled. Disadvantaged pupils at Ormiston South Parade Academy make significant and sustained progress, and achieve outcomes by the end of Key Stage 2 that are significantly more than those enjoyed by most other pupils nationally; Jane’s essay is informed by the successful strategies that she has used to recruit and retain outstanding leaders and teachers within her Grimsby academy, as well as the findings from extensive national research.

The issue of teacher recruitment and retention, as well as others, will be addressed at Teach First’s national conference this October. The 'Challenge the Impossible' case studies are essential reading for those who share OAT’s determination to ‘make the biggest difference’ to the life chances of disadvantaged pupils.
