The race, which is in its 22nd year, is just under 5 miles and 401 steps up and down the famous ‘scores’ of Lowestoft.

This proved to be a tough challenge placed down by Principal Ben Driver on the final day of summer term. Staff that took on the challenge had the school holidays to train for the event, with some taking up the training in the final days as the team effort gained momentum.

In total, 22 runners participated from Ormiston Denes Academy, all wearing lime green T-shirts. For the vast majority, it was their first ‘organised race’, with several hoping to finish the course.

Assistant Principal Philip Dougherty who is a strong runner had set a good pace for the men, with Claire Wilkinson doing equally for the female team.

All 22 members finished the race and cheered one another on at the finish. Team Captain Stuart Aldous was delighted with the result.

On completion of the race, several members of the team went to the final presentation, where they received praise in the closing speech for their enthusiasm and number in their team, the biggest non-affiliated running club team of the day.

To a great cheer, the Ormiston Denes team picked up The Ladies Team and The Mixed Team shields.

Ben Driver, Principal of Ormiston Denes Academy, said:

"All of our competitors, including myself, had a fantastic time and several staff and students are feeling rightly proud of themselves.

"Ormiston Denes would like to thank race organiser Tim Earl, as well as the officials and marshals of Waveney Valley Athletics Club, for leading such an excellent event."

Stuart Aldous, Team Captain for Ormiston Denes Academy in the race, said:

"The support from our pupils, parents, family members, marshals, and our community was astonishing. It was a fantastic day and I’m so proud of everyone who took part."
