Competing with five other schools from across the region, the academy sent along three of its talented students to the district final, which took place on 17 January at Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College.

After excelling in the first round of the competition in October 2018 against 14 other schools, students Ashley Moran, Jade Smart and Thomas Myatt took on the roles of Main Speaker, Chair Person and Vote of Thanks respectively at the Stoke-on-Trent final.

Ashley delivered a polished and comedic speech called ‘Oh, I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, entertaining the audience with the team’s chosen topic of dance and the positive impact it can have on people’s lives. Their success saw Ormiston Horizon named this year’s joint winners, alongside St. Peter’s Academy, of the SASCAL Youth Speaks Competition 2019.

The students will now go on to compete against three other schools in the Youth Speaks regional competition in Penkridge on 4 March.

Sophie Gardner, Director of Literacy at Ormiston Horizon Academy, said:

"We are extremely proud of Ashley, Jade and Thomas and they should be congratulated for what is a fantastic achievement.

"It has taken so much preparation and dedication for the students involved, with everyone at the academy supporting them throughout the competition process, so we are thrilled with how their immense hard work has paid off. “We wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the competition."
