Ormiston Park hosts athletics competition for local primaries

Ormiston Park Academy played host to almost a dozen primary schools, as part of the Year 6 Borough Athletics Competition.

The Academy welcomed Year 6 pupils from across the local area to the competition, representing their primary schools for the last time. The sporting event was supported by a group of Year 9 GCSE PE students from Ormiston Park, who helped to organise the day and run the events.

At the opening ceremony, Mrs Fenton-Hawes welcomed the competitors, staff and pupils. All of whom were very excited to be there and were already cheering for their competitors.

This was followed by the first round of field events and the 80 metre running heats, with outstanding performances in the ball-throw and turbo javelin. At the closing ceremony, the athletes were presented their medals on the podium to the sound of rapturous applause and flash photography.

The competing schools included Aveley Primary School, Bonnygate Primary School, Dilkes Academy, Graham James Primary Academy, Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, Little Thurrock, Purfleet Primary School, Quarry Hill Academy, Shaw Primary Academy, Warren Primary School, Woodside Academy. As well as competing against fellow athletes in the region, the event gave pupils a taste of life and the vast sporting opportunities on offer at Ormiston Park Academy.

Huw Derrick, Principal at Ormiston Park Academy said:

"Sport has long been championed at Ormiston Park Academy and we were delighted to invite primary school pupils across the local area to the academy to compete at the Borough Athletics Competition.

"We are really proud of the excellent way that our students represented the academy, organising the day, ensuring that each event ran smoothly and supporting the pupils along the way."
