City of Norwich School, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, welcomed leading wheelchair tennis player Ruby Bishop as part of Norfolk’s Most Inclusive Sports Day.
Ruby visited the school as part of her Inclusive Sports Day Campaign, which aims to challenge discrimination and break down barriers within PE and school sport.
During the visit, Ruby spoke to students about her journey as an elite wheelchair tennis player, sharing the challenges she has faced and the importance of ensuring every young person has the opportunity to take part in sport, regardless of disability or ability.
Students also took part in discussions about inclusion, equality and respect, exploring how positive attitudes and simple changes can help make PE lessons and sporting opportunities more accessible for everyone.
The visit reflected CNS’ values of kindness, tolerance and respect, encouraging students to consider how inclusion can be put into practice in sport and beyond.
Ruby Bishop said:
“Every child deserves to feel included in PE and school sport. Through my Inclusive Sport Day Campaign, I want to challenge discrimination, raise awareness, and encourage schools to create environments where every student feels welcome and has the opportunity to thrive. I’m also excited to celebrate the schools leading the way, and I can’t wait to recognise the top three schools for their commitment to inclusion.”
Jo Philpott, Headteacher at City of Norwich School, said:
“It was excellent for Ruby to be involved in City of Norwich School’s Sports Day. Ruby spoke with students about her experiences and the importance of inclusive sport. Her message really resonated with our students and encouraged them to play a part in creating a supportive and respectful environment.
“At City of Norwich School, we are committed to ensuring all students feel able to take part, build confidence and enjoy the benefits of sport. Ruby’s visit was an inspiring reminder of how powerful inclusive opportunities can be in helping young people feel valued and included.”
