Cowes Enterprise College, is celebrating after achieving the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools Gold Award, recognising the school’s commitment to outdoor learning and protecting the environment.
The Green Tree Schools Award celebrates the school’s work to help young people connect with the natural world through hand-on activities, outdoor learning and practical projects. From exploring wildlife and improving the school groups to learning about trees, habitats and sustainability, students have been discovering how small actions can make a meaningful difference.
As part of their work towards the award, students have been encouraged to look more closely at the natural environment around them and consider it from different perspectives. Woodland Trust activities have challenged students to think about how the world might look from the viewpoint of different creatures, helping them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wildlife and natural environment around them.
Sixth Form Student Leaders said:
“We will continue our hard work to help look after every animal at Cowes, whether big or small.”
Schools collect points by taking part in activities such as tree planting, reducing carbon emissions and visiting woodland areas, progressing through bronze, silver and gold levels towards platinum. The programme also brings environmental learning into the classroom, alongside gardening and eco clubs, Forest School activities and wider environmental initiatives.
The school’s Eco Council have played an important role in championing the work, helping to inspire others to get involved and take greater care of the environment.
Ruth Griffiths-Nash, Head of School at Cowes Enterprise College, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to have achieved the Green Tree Schools Award! It is a fantastic recognition of the enthusiasm and commitment our pupils and staff have shown towards looking after our environment and making the most of the wonderful outdoor spaces around us. We want our young people to understand that even small actions can make a really big difference, and this award gives us a brilliant opportunity to learn, get involved and have fun while doing something positive for our Island, and the planet. We’re incredibly proud of everyone who has played a part in achieving this award and can’t wait to see what we can do next!”
The Green Tree Schools Award is a free programme provided by the Woodland Trust, offering resources and support to help schools engage students in practical environmental projects and develop a lasting connection with nature.
