Broadland High Ormiston Academy robotics teams reach national finals

Broadland High Ormiston Academy is celebrating after its Year 7 and Year 8 LEGO Robotics teams secured a coveted place at the LEGO National Championship in Harrogate.

Students wowed judges with their technical skill, creativity and teamwork, earning their spot at the prestigious national competition.

Hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the event will bring together around 72 teams from across the UK. Students will showcase months of work, tackle real-world problems and develop innovative solutions, brought to life through models and presentations. Teams must also design, engineer and programme a LEGO robot to complete a series of challenges within a fast paced two-and-a-half-minute window.

In the lead up to the qualifying event, students demonstrated exceptional dedication, committing countless hours after school and during lunchtimes to refine their robot designs, rehearse presentations and strengthen their teamwork, supported by Sonia Tayor, Science Teacher and Lydia Roberts, Head of PSHE, who have given around 50 hours to the after-school club.

The school is committed to inclusive and collaborative learning, with around half of the team being neurodivergent. This achievement marks a proud moment for the school, with students demonstrating resilience, enthusiasm and a shared commitment to excellence and inventive thinking throughout their journey.

Matt Sprake, Principal at Broadland High Ormiston Academy, said: “We’re incredible proud of our students for this fantastic achievement. They’ve shown real dedication, creativity and teamwork throughout, and it’s been brilliant to see how they’ve supported each other along the way. This success really reflects the inclusive environment we’ve built here, where every student’s strengths are recognised and celebrated. We wish them all the very best as they take on the national competition.”
