Students from Stoke High School have enjoyed a unique sailing experience over the Easter break.
Six students and two staff members took part in a four-day voyage aboard the Blue Mermaid, a historic Thames sailing barge. The trip spanned 46 miles from Ipswich to Heybridge Basin, visiting Colne Point and Bradwell, and provided an unforgettable opportunity for students to develop life skills and gain hands-on sailing knowledge in a real maritime environment.
Throughout the trip, the students took part in a wide range of onboard duties, from sail hoisting and deck work to food preparation and housekeeping. The unpredictable British weather meant the crew faced both challenging winds and calm waters, but the experience challenged them to step out of their comfort zones, fostered teamwork, and built resilience – all while encouraging independence and leadership.

Confidence grew steadily across the trip, with students rising to new challenges and supporting one another in every task. From managing their own routines to facing physical tests like climbing the rigging, the group showed courage and determination, embodying the school’s values of respect and achievement throughout. Speaking about their experience, one student said, “It really pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I’m so proud of what I achieved. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’ll never forget it”.
The trip was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Ipswich Maritime Trust, the Annie Tranmer Charitable Trust and the Royal Thames Yacht Club Charitable Trust, who helped fund this exciting and unique opportunity for students.
The school hopes to offer the sailing trip as a regular enrichment opportunity in future years, continuing to expand students’ learning beyond the classroom.
Karen Jordan, Pastoral Support Manager said: “It was a privilege to witness our students grow in confidence and character during the trip. They embraced challenges with maturity, showed compassion and encouraged one another. This voyage has created lasted memories for us all and shown the incredible value of opportunities beyond the classroom.”
Karen Baldwin, Principal said: “We are incredibly proud of our students for how they conducted themselves throughout this remarkable experience. They demonstrated Stoke High School’s values every day – from courage and perseverance to leadership and compassion. Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping our young people grow in confidence and gain new perspectives, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make the trip happen.”
