Inspiring the next generation of girls in coding at CNS

A student-led initiative being run at City of Norwich School, that hopes to change the face of computer science study, is proving to be a great success.

The Girls’ Coding Club was created and is led by Year 11 Head Student Bella, as her official legacy project.  Bella began the club with the aim of encouraging more girls to become interested in coding and take computer science as a GCSE.  In her own year group, there are currently only three girls studying GCSE computer science and it was something she felt passionate about changing.

The club currently consists of around 25 students, mostly from Years 7 to 9 and the club continues to go from strength to strength. Bella said “Some of the students have been coming and learning how to code for two years now, and I feel really proud of what we have achieved, especially since most of them are in years 7 to 9 and doing Python (the programming language) at GCSE levels”.

The club offers a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, solving problems and challenging themselves.

Jo Philpott, Principal of City of Norwich School, said: “Bella’s legacy project is a fantastic example of student leadership in action. The Girls’ Coding Club is making a meaningful impact by giving students the confidence and skills to pursue computer science as a GCSE subject. We are incredibly proud of Bella’s commitment to creating opportunities for others and inspiring more girls to explore coding and technology.”

The club is supported by Computer Science teacher Mr Cox, who offers guidance and encouragement as students develop their skills and take on new coding challenges.
