CNS students fundraise to kickstart new sixth form rugby teams

City of Norwich School (CNS) is preparing to take to the pitch after forming a new sixth form rugby team with the help of its dedicated students.

The academy launched the new team after recognising the sporting success of its Year 9, 10, and 11 students who are passionate about playing the sport they love.

It will build on the success of the academy’s recent rugby achievements and is inspired by students who missed the excitement of rugby from their earlier years, creating an opportunity for students to continue their sporting passion into sixth form.

The brand-new team would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of its students, who set out to fundraise for new kit after realising the existing school rugby shirts were too small for the sixth form players. Not to be deterred, passionate students Charlie and Ben successfully raised enough money to buy new shirts for their team, including through organising a bake sale which raised £250 and securing £400 in sponsorship from local businesses.

“Seeing our hard work come together to create this team has been amazing,” said Charlie, one of the team leaders. “We’re really excited to get on the pitch and represent our school.”

With the support of Mr. O’Brien, one of the school’s PE teachers, who has volunteered to referee and coordinate matches, the new rugby team is now ready to take on other schools in the coming weeks.

Jo Philpott, Headteacher at City of Norwich School, said: “City of Norwich School has a strong history of student initiatives that promote teamwork and leadership. It has been excellent to see Ben and Charlie support their passion for the sport and continue the legacy of CNS rugby.

“Our school community looks forward to seeing the team’s progress and success on the rugby field, and we’ll be cheering them on in future matches.”
