Comedian John Bishop inspires students during homecoming to Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy

Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy welcomed comedian, actor and presenter John Bishop back to his former school for a special Q&A session with sixth form students.

Bishop, who grew up locally and attended the school when it was known as Brookvale Comprehensive, returned to speak with Year 12 and Year 13 students studying A-level business and media. The visit offered students a unique opportunity to hear first-hand about his journey from Runcorn to the national stage.

During the session, Bishop shared candid insights into the realities of working in the entertainment industry, from the challenges of breaking into show business to performing in front of thousands. Students quizzed him on his early career, his favourite projects and the wide range of jobs he held before becoming a household name.

He also spoke openly about resilience and self-belief, reflecting on the importance of pushing through fear of failure and backing yourself when opportunities arise. Alongside discussing his professional journey, Bishop chatted about football, family life and the experiences that shaped his career.

In an exciting finale to the visit, Bishop invited a group of sixth form students to attend a behind-the-scenes experience at MediaCItyUK in Manchester next month. Students will have the opportunity to explore a working studio environment and gain insight into an upcoming television project, providing valuable exposure to careers in the creative industries.

The visit created a real buzz across the academy’s sixth form, highlighting the breadth of opportunities available to students.

Scott Fenner, Head of Sixth Form at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy, said: “It was a privilege to welcome John back to his former school and to see the impact his story had on our students. Hearing first-hand about his journey to national success was incredibly powerful. Our sixth form is committed to raising aspirations and opening doors for young people, and opportunities like this bring learning to life in a truly memorable way. The invitation to MediaCityUK is an exciting extension of this experience and will give our students invaluable insight into the creative industries.”

Kathryn Evans, Principal of Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy, said: “It was fantastic to see John Bishop return to Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy to inspire the next generation. Providing meaningful encounters with employers and industry professionals is a key part of our commitment to raising aspirations and broadening horizons for every young person. Opportunities like this help students to see what is possible and to understand the resilience, creativity and determination that underpin success.”
