Edward Worlledge pupils graduate from Scholars Programme with top awards

Fourteen pupils from Edward Worlledge Ormiston Academy, in Great Yarmouth, have completed the prestigious Scholars Programme, organised by The Brilliant Club, and celebrated their graduation at the University of Cambridge.

Year 5 and 6 pupils from the school, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, have taken part in a national programme run by The Brilliant Club, which introduces primary pupils to university-style learning. The experience included seven in-depth tutorials with a PhD tutor and culminated in a graduation event hosted by the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge.

Through this year’s module, English: Nature, Humanity and Literature, pupils explored nature through storytelling and developed advanced literary techniques. In order to graduate, each pupil had to complete a high-quality 1,000-word final assignment comprising a short story and detailed literary analysis, which was assessed using university-style grading.

Edward Worlledge pupils achieved their highest-ever set of final results, with six talented pupils awarded a First Class grade and many others securing 2:1s. The fantastic results reflect the children’s commitment, curiosity and academic growth throughout the programme.

The day also included a guided tour of the prestigious University, the chance to hear from undergraduates first-hand about student life and opportunities to connect with fellow scholars from other schools. Pupils from Ormiston Sudbury Academy, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, also took part in the graduation, bringing young minds together with a sense of shared achievement and celebration across the Trust.

Speaking on their experience, two year 6 pupils from Edward Worlledge, Joana and Connie, acted as ‘Spokescholars’ for the group, delivering thoughtful and articulate speeches about their learning journeys through the exciting programme.

Connie said: “The Scholars Programme has been good to show me how I can be resilient when things get hard and has shown me that I can achieve things even if it sometimes feels impossible.”

Joana said: “One of the biggest things I have learned was how important it is to be original and to not be afraid of making mistakes. Writing is a journey and every word I write helps me grow as a storyteller.”

Craig Honey, Principal said: “We have the highest expectations for all our pupils at Edward Worlledge and believe that a good education is essential in empowering young minds to achieve their fullest potential and thrive in anything they choose to do. We are proud to offer unique opportunities such as taking part in The Brilliant Club, which empowers all young people to aim high, work hard and dream big.

“We are incredibly proud of our scholars for their dedication, hard-work and enthusiasm throughout this journey and it has been fantastic to see them celebrate their significant achievement at their graduation. The programme has not only given our pupils a taste of university-style learning but has helped them grow in confidence, resilience and ambition. They’ve proven that with the right support and mindset, anything is possible.”
