Big Sleep Out

George Salter Academy students brave the cold in Sleep Out for St Basils

Students and staff from George Salter Academy have raised an impressive £1,774.45 for St Basils after taking part in the charity’s 35th annual Big Sleep Out at Millennium Point.

For the fifth consecutive year, 35 students and 12 staff members braved cold temperatures and heavy rain, bedding down from 6pm to 6am with sleeping bags, cardboard and layers of warm clothing so that another young person may not have to. Despite joining hundreds of participants from across the region, George Salter Academy was the largest school group in attendance.

Running since 1990, the Big Sleep Out brings communities together to raise vital funds for young person who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. St Basils works across the Midlands to provide safety, stability and the specialist support needed to help young people develop the confidence and skills needed to build brighter futures.

The funds raised by George Salter Academy will help provide 111 safe nights at St Basils, offering secure accommodation, personal development opportunities and practical support to help young people move towards independence.

Rupi Bellingham, Head of School at George Salter Academy, said: “The work that St Basils do is incredibly important, and we are so proud of our students and staff for once again coming together to support young people facing homelessness.

Taking part in the Big Sleep Out helps our community understand the challenges many young people experience and reinforces our commitment to supporting those across Birmingham who need it most. As a key part of the local community, we remain dedicated to helping every young person access the opportunities they deserve.”
