Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy retains IQM flagship status for inclusive practice

Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy has once again been recognised as a national leader in inclusive education after retaining its prestigious flagship school status from the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM).

Following a rigorous review in July, the academy was commended for its “superb inclusive practice” and “strong culture and understanding of the links between emotional regulation, behaviour, and attitudes to learning.” This marks another milestone in the school’s ongoing work to support all students, especially those with complex needs, to thrive both personally and academically.

The IQM assessor praised the school’s pioneering use of the THRIVE Approach, designed to support students with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Since the programme’s implementation, the school has seen significant improvements in attendance and a reduction in exclusions, with some students increasing attendance from just 50% to 91%.

The report highlighted how inclusive practice is embedded across the whole school, from subject teachers adapting teaching methods to governors advocating for equity and access. Students themselves now take on leadership roles as THRIVE Ambassadors, helping peers regulate emotions and build resilience, while also supporting younger students during transitions into the academy.

The school was also recognised for its ambitious efforts to strengthen early intervention pathways, embed trauma-informed practice and enhance speech and language provision, with clear evidence that these strategies are helping to close gaps in attainment and engagement, particularly for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Zaina Porschke, Vice Principal for Inclusion, said: “To be part of such a small group of schools to have achieved and retained IQM Flagship Status really does highlight what’s so special about Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy. Inclusion isn’t just something we do, it’s embedded in who we are. We are proud to champion an approach where every member of our community plays a role in making education accessible, supportive and aspirational for all learners. It’s a privilege to work with students who show such resilience and ambition every day, and we remain committed to helping them thrive both in and beyond the classroom.”

Kathryn Evans, Principal at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy, said: “We’re incredibly proud to once again be recognised as an IQM Flagship School. This award reflects the hard work and belief of our staff, students and families in making our academy a place where everyone feels supported and able to succeed. Whether it’s through tailored teaching, strong pastoral care or the high expectations we set for all learners, inclusion underpins everything we do, and it’s making a real difference to young people’s lives.”
