Ormiston Herman Academy, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, has marked its 70th birthday with a joyful two-day celebration honouring its history, community and continued commitment to local families.
To bring the milestone to life, the academy hosted a 1950s-style school day, transporting pupils and staff back to the decade it first opened its doors. Classrooms swapped technology for chalkboards, children arrived in vintage-inspired outfits and lunch followed a retro theme, with a menu inspired by the era. Former pupils visited throughout the day to share memories of their own time at Herman, giving today’s learners a unique glimpse into school life across the generations.
The celebrations continued with a special Community Open Day, where the school welcomed past staff, alumni and local residents. Guests were invited to explore how the school has evolved over the decades and contributed their own memories and reflections. A display of historic photographs, including rare images sourced from the Norfolk Archives, sparked lively conversations and touching moments of nostalgia as visitors recognised classmates, teachers and familiar spaces from their school days.
Kristy Redhead, Principal of Ormiston Herman Academy, said: “We were incredibly proud to mark our 70th birthday in a way that brought our school community together and celebrated everything that makes Herman special. Seeing past and present pupils connect over shared memories was truly moving, and we loved hearing first-hand how the school has shaped lives across generations. It’s a powerful reminder of how deeply rooted Herman is in the local area, and how proud we are to continue that legacy.”
This special milestone has offered a meaningful moment to reflect on the academy’s journey so far, and the important role it has played in the lives of generations of local families. Looking ahead, the school remains committed to building on this legacy by fostering a welcoming, respectful environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential.
