Be the change you want to see. Could you be an academy governor?
Being a governor is a great way to have a positive impact on your community, by making a difference to the lives of its children. You’ll help steer your academy, establish its vision and ethos and challenge staff to deliver on targets. You will join a team committed to improving the lives and prospects of young people.
Ormiston Academies Trust will support you in your new role and continually supports the governing body on its journey. We provide induction training, expert advice and ongoing support throughout every governor’s term of office.
What do you need to be a governor?
Being a governor is a great way to have a positive impact on your community, by making a difference to the lives of its children.
Simply put, you need a passion for supporting academies to give children the best possible learning opportunities and where you may have specific formal qualifications or experience, this would be a bonus. Specifically, OAT does require some governors to have skills and experience in business, finance and education, however what we also want to nurture is diversity – in skills, background and life-experience. Our aspiration is for all governing bodies in the trust to include committed people with diverse ethnicities, who represent a variety of ages, sexualities, disabilities and other protected characteristics. We know that a range of lived experiences on governing bodies changes the quality of questioning and challenge, making our academies better places for children to learn and enabling them to see people ‘like them’ in strategic and senior leadership roles.
All governors will undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check before they start (organised by OAT) and you must be over 18 and living in the UK.
If you’d like an informal chat or have any questions about becoming a governor, before completing our online form, please contact us at [email protected] or call us on 0121 262 4721.
How to apply
We are seeking committed governors and chairs of governors to strengthen our governing boards across the OAT family, and to support academies on their journeys of improvement and transformation.
Our 40+ academies are looking for people who share our values, who can offer leadership and experience, as well as the right level of challenge and support. Our values are aspirational – we believe that anyone can excel, that we must be inclusive, share what is best and enjoy the challenge ahead of us.
If you share our values and feel you can offer valuable skills and experience to academy governance we would like to hear from you. If we match you to a vacancy you will receive induction training with ongoing development and support.
