Students and staff at Ormiston Horizon Academy are celebrating after taking home the coveted OAT Sports Cup for sporting excellence (north and west region).
For the seventh year in a row, the academy demonstrated its dominance in sports excellence, with students succeeding in long jump, discus, and shotput competitions and taking the lead in track events including the 100, 200, and 800 metre races.
The academy’s remarkable winning streak across previous years is a testament to its ongoing commitment to nurturing athletic talent, promoting physical fitness, and fostering a culture of teamwork within its students.
Held annually, the OAT Sports Cup brings together students from across the trust for an exhilarating day of day of competitive sports and athletics. This year, the event had something for everyone, with athletes across Year 7 to Year 10 taking part in track and field events and fun tug-of-war and dodgeball competitions in pursuit of victory for their academy.
The events showcase the exceptional athletic abilities of students across our north and west academies with 12 schools attending, the biggest event to-date, giving students a chance to come together, compete, and forge lifelong bonds. This year’s north/west cup was held at Northwood Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent, with OAT students filling the grandstand to cheer on their teammates and friends.
Andy Fitzgibbon, Principal said: All the staff in the academy are very proud of the students who represented us at the OAT Sports Cup. They are a determined and talented group, who really demonstrated our academy values of: Resilience, Respect and Responsibility throughout the day. A special mention to our PE Faculty for their wonderful teaching and coaching that allows our students to be fully prepared when representing the school. We are already looking forward to next year’s competition.
Ruby Moores, Year 8 student said: It is always a privilege to represent OHA, I was so excited about doing it with my friends too. This is my second OAT Sports Cup win and I’m really determined to be back again next year. The level of competition was strong this year, I was thrilled that I could bring home the gold medal.
Sammy Clarke, Lead Practitioner for PE: “It has been an honour to organise the day once again this year and to provide an opportunity for so many of our schools to showcase the amazing talent that they have. All of the students behaved impeccably and were a true credit to their schools. The level of competition, sportsmanship and enjoyment this year was off the scale.
“Thank you to all the staff members that not only helped on the day, but through the running and organising of the day, and the other staff that covered their absence. A special shout out to the schools that due to varying reasons, were unable to bring a full squad, but allowed their students the opportunity to participate nonetheless.”
