Ormiston students shine at Jack Petchey Speak Out regional final

Students from Ormiston Rivers Academy and Ormiston Park Academy, showcased exceptional public speaking skills as they competed in the Jack Petchey Speak Out regional final in Colchester.

The prestigious event brought together talented young speakers from across Essex, providing them with a platform to share their ideas, passions and stories.

Isobel, a Year 10 student at Ormiston Rivers Academy, captivated the audience with her powerful speech titled “The Perfect Woman.” Tackling important issues including the impact of social media on young girls, body shaming, the need for women to support each other and the manipulation of beauty standards throughout history, Isobel’s performance was both thought-provoking and expertly delivered.

Her journey to the final began with a full-day public speaking workshop alongside 60 other year 10 students. After delivering her speech in a Year 8 assembly, Isobel was selected to represent Ormiston Rivers Academy. Her commitment and preparation were clear, earning her praise for her confident and impactful performance.

At Ormiston Park Academy, Michelle (see photo below), who is also in Year 10, represented the school with an inspiring speech titled “Music Unites Us.” Joining 14 other regional finalists, Michelle’s speech highlighted the power of music to bring people together, bridging divides and fostering a sense of community. Her passionate delivery left a strong impression on the audience.

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, a renowned programme designed to build young people’s confidence and public speaking skills, has provided both students with a valuable platform to develop their voices and share their perspectives.

Joanne Williams, Principal of Ormiston Rivers Academy, said: “We are incredibly proud of Isobel for her outstanding performance in the regional final. Her speech was a powerful, thought-provoking piece that showed maturity beyond her years. Opportunities like this help our students develop confidence, communication skills and the courage to speak out on important issues.”

Munira Said, Principal of Ormiston Park Academy, added: “Michelle represented our academy brilliantly at the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Her passion for the power of music shone through in her speech, and we couldn’t be prouder. Public speaking is an essential skill and Michelle’s performance is a wonderful example of what young people can achieve when given the chance to be heard.”
