Wodensborough Ormiston Academy and West Midlands Police unite to tackle knife crime

Wodensborough Ormiston Academy (WOA), in collaboration with West Midlands Police, has taken proactive steps to address the growing issue of knife crime by hosting a powerful and thought-provoking workshop for students. This initiative aims to educate young people about the dangers of knife crime and its devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities.

The workshop, delivered by representatives from West Midlands Police, formed part of a broadcast media day on Wednesday 29 January. The event brought significant attention, with reporters from major outlets like Sky News attending to cover this vital and timely message. Students had the opportunity to engage in interactive sessions led by the police, while Principal Leigh Moore and police representatives shared their perspectives during interviews.

This initiative comes at a time of reflection and healing for the academy, as it coincides with the sentencing of two individuals connected to a tragic incident involving a Year 11 student. Sensitively addressing this context, the workshop provided a platform for raising awareness and empowering students to make safer choices, while honouring the memory of those affected.

WOA and Ormiston are committed to fostering safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments. In line with this commitment, another academy within the Ormiston Academies Trust, Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy (OIEA), has also been working closely with local police to deliver assemblies on knife crime. This demonstrates a shared dedication across the trust to prioritising student safety and equipping young people with knowledge to navigate challenging situations.

WOA Principal, Leigh Moore said: “We are determined to support our students in understanding the consequences of knife crime, not only for themselves but for their communities. This workshop, delivered in partnership with West Midlands Police, reflects our commitment to safeguarding and empowering our young people.”

West Midlands Police also emphasised the importance of these educational collaborations, noting that by working closely with schools, they can help to build stronger, safer communities.

Wodensborough Ormiston Academy and its partners continue to inspire positive change by encouraging open dialogue, awareness, and preventative action against knife crime.
